Proud moment for Rapid Penang co-operative

The Star Thursday June 9, 2011
KOPERASI Pekerja Rapid Penang Bhd (Korpena) earned more than RM1.6mil in revenue between July 2010 and March 2011, and is set to increase the amount, thanks to its appointment as service agent for Bank Rakyat.
Chairman Ahmad Shabuddin Abdullah said the appointment was wonderful news for Korpena which had been operating for less than three years. “I believe this opportunity is coming to Korpena due to our ability and success in diversifying our trading activities since our inception in July 2008.

“Korpena has ventured into a variety of businesses such as bus and office cleaning services and catering as well as offering cash loans for members,” he said.He was speaking to reporters after receiving the appointment letter from Bank Rakyat assistant general manager (services and subsidiaries) Zul Hisham Mohd Yusoff during a ceremony at the Rapid Penang Bus Depot in Lorong Kulit recently.

Present to witness the occasion was Co-operative Commission of Malaysia (CCM) director of business development Abdullah Dohat. Korpena is the third of such authorised agent in Penang after Koperasi USM and Koperasi Kemahiran Tinggi Balik Pulau Berhad.
Ahmad Shabuddin said the appointment was set to boost the co-operative’s income and trading competency. “As a Bank Rakyat service agent, Korpena will introduce, promote and market the bank’s products and services directly to the local community,” he said.
Korpena, the first ever public transportation company co-operative in Penang, now operates at Wisma MIC Pulau Pinang on Jalan Datuk Keramat. The co-operative’s vision is to improve the socio-economic standing of its members as well as creating job opportunities for the local community.
It has 429 members under its wing with fixed assets worth over RM100,000.
